Durbin and Reid about to cave on offshore drilling

It would take 17 years for offshore drilling to affect gas prices  (savings of "a couple pennies per gallon")

Experts agree that offshore drilling will cause no cuts on gas prices for about another 17 years, and when it does, the savings are estimated to be "a couple of pennies" per gallon, according to an EIA expert.

Brookings Institute's David Sandalow notes, ""Drilling offshore to lower oil prices is like walking an extra 20 feet per day to lose weight,"..."It's just not going to make much difference."

See details and more expert opinion here:

So McCain needs to shut up about the urgent need to lift the ban on offshore drilling. It will provide no relief whatsoever to the current gas crisis.

And I already hear news about top Democrats, including Durbin, working on a compromise with Republicans to begin such drilling.
And I would not be surprised if Obama pivots on the issue, as a result of pressure from McCain on the subject.

Drilling (none / 0)

I'll be damn pissed if the drilling starts.  And from what I understand, the Republicans are taking ANWAR off of the table to try and get the democrats to comprimise.  I think, though, that there will be enough vote to filibuster.  At least Feinstein opposes drilling.

Re: Durbin and Reid about to cave (2.00 / 1)

What the dems are doing is saying let's get the oil companies moving on the leases they already have and if we see some results on those in about 5 years then they will relook at offshore oil leases.  Great strategy.

Really?  I'm cautiously optimistic then.

Obama will flip on it too (none / 0)

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), fresh from his GI Bill victory, said that he is now making energy a major priority. "We need to look at all our assets," he said, suggesting a large package including expanded offshore drilling, alternative energy, nuclear power and technology to make coal cleaner.

Now there's a leader.

Well, you made mention of this a few weeks ago, so I guess you saw it coming.  Can we keep the drills of the CA coast, though?

We don't want them on the east coast either.

If you want Unity, nominate a Democrat
