Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton

I simply will never vote for Hillary Clinton for one big, gigantic reason:

She voted for the Iraq War and now she is lying about her justification for it.

Just think: The vote to authorize war in Iraq was the most important vote of this woman's lifetime -- and she failed.

Now she looks at the American people with a straight face and says she didn't know she was giving President Bush authorization to go to war.

In 2002 and 2003, I was marching on the streets against this war. I knew that vote was giving Bush authority to go to war.

Everybody I was marching with knew it was a vote to go to war. Even Hillary's fellow Senators knew it was a vote to go to war.

So, am I supposed to vote for a woman who did not show sound judgement on the most important vote of her life and now lies to me with a straight face?

This is classic Clintonian politicking and it must come to an end.

In a general election with Hillary as the Democratic nominee, the Iraq war will be taken off the table as an issue -- and that can not happen in this election year. Iraq, contrary to popular opinion, is THE issue of this election. Indeed, the economy is becoming an issue, too -- but the economy is in the shape it is in because of our war in Iraq. Everything comes back to this unjustifiable, criminal act of war. We don't have money for health care, schools, roads, public financing of campaigns....

And Hillary voted for it.

Hillary will not be able to stand on a stage with John McCain and argue against this war because when the heat was on, she wilted. And when it was politically expedient, she changed her mind.

We saw Bill Clinton change his positions again and again to appease the Republican Congress, starting with his dramatic change early in his presidency on gays in the military. It was, as we would learn over the next 8 years, a classic Clinton move. It makes me afraid that once Hillary and Bill were back in the White House, they would find a reason to keep the troops in Iraq.

I believe Barack Obama is indeed the transformative political figure of our time. And his time is now. He has shown sound judgement on the major issues facing this country. He knows the importance of people being involved in their communities and how grassroots activism is the catalyst for major, sweeping changes.

I support Barack Obama because he has washed away the cynicism in me that was brought on by the last 16 years of divisive, fear-mongering politics.

And while I don't agree with him on everything (i.e., I support a single-payer health care system) I do believe that he will appeal to the best in most of us and inspire those of us who care about people and who care about our country to take action.

How about voting No to the war and consistanlty voting YES for funding it? Give me a break.

I don't think anyone with a heart (none / 0)

would vote against giving our troops, stuck in the middle of a god-forsaken desert, fighting a war against an invisible enemy, the funds they needed to survive.

Re: I don't think anyone with a heart (none / 0)

So... you just need to say "no" once and you can get a free pass all the way to the presidency? How convenient!

Well, like I said (none / 0)

at least Obama wasn't sticking his finger in the wind and saying "If I want to be president someday I'd better vote for the war," which is what Hillary -- and most of the Democrats -- did.

I see nothing wrong with supporting the troops once they've been deployed into war -- whether you agree with it or not.

Re: Well, like I said (none / 0)

Actually I think Obama said NO to war because he wanted to be famous. If you look closely his voting record, you will know better.

Right (none / 0)

Because he became SOOOOOO famous after he said he was against the war.

I live in Chicago. In Illinois, barely anyone knew who he was in early 2004. In fact, nobody thought he had a snowball's chance in hell to win the nomination, much less the Senate seat, because he came out against the war.

He didn't become "famous" until he gave the speech at the Democratic convention.

Re: Right (none / 0)

What was at stake when he said No to the war? What did he do after saying No to the war? If he continuted to be "anti-war" politician in Washington like Kuchinich and others, I would respect him. But as far as I recall, that was it. Does he reserve to be a president because he said NO to the war on Iraq once in Illinois senate (representing largely anti-war crowd)? Not really.

I quote the great Robert DeNiro (none / 0)

who was a Hillary supporter in the beginning.

Speaking of Obama today, he said: "He wasn't experienced enough to authorize the invasion of Iraq."

BAM!

Can you explain that ?

Our troops are still in the field right.

Re: Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

How about the bullshit excuse Hillary gives for voting for the war!

Why won't she just say she voted for it because she thought it was a good idea and as time passed, she realized it wasn't a good vote?

Oh right, because if she does, then everyone will know she doesn't have sound judgement.

I'm no Hillary fan, but damn if this election isn't about the courts again.  I won't like it much, but I'll do my best to convince my anti-Hillary friends that they're wrong.

You are not rational. Do you hold all .... (none / 0)

Do you hold all to that standard?

If all Democrats were held to the same standard we could lose control of Congress this year.   A lot of Democrats voted the same way as her.

Re: Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

Dear DoubleD's (interesting name):

When she voted for the war, she and many other leading democratics (John Edwards, John Kerry, etc.) were told it was military invasion for WMDs.  Other dems were smarter and knew it was an inappropriate war.  The point is, you can't blame them ALL for being misled.  Since then, Clinton and so many others have fought to bring the troops home.  Also, keep in mind that Obama voted in favor of funding the war in 2004, 2005. If he was truly against it, wouldn't he have stood up against funding?

I think Obama and Clinton are basically equal when it comes to voting record.  I feel terrible that you and other Obama supporters have been misled into thinking she is this evil war-lover.  She is no different than many other conservative-dems.  In fact, it is Obama who so aggresively wants us to send troops to Pakistan,  further prolonging the war against terror.

Re: Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

Well do we want a "conservative Dem" on foreign policy?

I would expect any Democrat who made the mistake of voting for the war to explicitly apologize for their vote and say it was a mistake, just like Edwards did. Clinton flat-out refuses to do this.

Two possibilities why:

a) She believes it WAS a mistake but doesn't want to appear weak on national security. This attempt to appear Republican-lite is why Dems keep losing. You can't win on, "I'm like you, only less so."

b) She really is a hawk and doesn't regret her vote, only the way the war has been waged. In which case, I would question her commitment to getting us out of this mess at all. Notice her unwillingness to set a timeline for withdrawal. Most progressives don't want a return to Bush 41-style foreign policy, they want a new approach.

Re: Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

Great diary. I think this sums up what why a lot of progressives will NOT support HRC. At least John Edwards has the balls to say he was wrong. Hillary has made a point of NOT explicitly apologizing.

Now Hillary claims that she was voting for inspections. If I could tell the case for war was a fraud, how could Hillary, who had access to the most detailed intel of anyone in the country, not tell?

In someone else's words:

"Give me a break! This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen."

awesome diary (none / 0)

expect incoming from the paid hillary posters. if hillary can lie about the most disastrous foreign policy blunder of our generatio - which has cost us thousands of lives and trillions of dollars - do yu think she would think one second about doing the same with health care or any other politically tuchy issue?

I guarantee you that in the coming weeks she will come out against garnishment to pay for her health care program.

when bush and clinton lie, people die.

given Obama's failure to lead (none / 0)

in the Senate on any issue of major importance (defunding the war, FISA filibuster, etc.), and his generally cautious approach since being elected to the club, I personally doubt that he would have voted against the AUMF if he'd been in the Senate in the fall of 2002.

I won't vote for Hillary because she's run a dishonest primary campaign based on character assassination and race baiting.  I don't like her record on the war vote or (especially) her neocon "all options on the table" language towards Iran, but really, their foriegn policy stances really aren't that different.  The disingeuous viciousness of her primary is what lost me.

Re: Why I won't EVER Vote for Hillary Clinton (1.00 / 1)

Now, now, let's not sink to the level of the Hillary supporters on this forum...the ones who spew bile
at the mere mention of Barack's name. I'm a huge Obama supporter but you can be sure as shit I'd vote
for Hillary if she's the nominee. She has an outstanding record of accomplishment and would easily make a better president than 99% of the Democratic officials in this country.

Considering what we've been offered up in the past as Dem. presidential candidates, I'd say this is a dream year for us. I think we have two fabulous choices...two people who are inspiring the electorate like I've never seen before. Compare the likes of Clinton and Obama with the group of wishy-washy candidates we had in '04. Wolf was right on at the debate when he said that Obama/Clinton (or Clinton/Obama) would be a dream ticket. So why has this forum sunk to the levels of a teenage Halo 2 forum with all the venom? I can't say but its uglier than I thought it would EVER get.

Do I think Hillary has the ability to beat McCain. Not really. If she is the nominee, expect the gates of Hell to open up and engulf her in a wave of sleeze like we've never seen before. What happened to Kerry will pale in comparison. They'll be more talk of blowjobs than policy issues and the MSM will have a field day.

And if Hillary does get elected? I'm guessing her administration will be "business as usual" politics just like it was with Bill and the dream of a truly progressive presidency and all that that confers to our country will be, for the most part, flushed down the toilet. But will be it better than electing any of the Christo-fascists, megalomanics and outright nutjobs the GOP is offering up? You better believe it!
