(I originally posted this at Dkos. Wanted to post it here and garner peoples' reactions.)
Yesterday, I predicted a Clinton win by 5 points in Wisconsin and was lamenting the pause that would put in Obama's momentum.
Thank God I was wrong.
Since most people here buy into the craptacular spin from the Clintons that Obama doesn't have a position on anything I offer you the following links.
So, the next time someone tells you Obama does not have any positions, you can direct them to the following links. Which, of course, come straight off of his website.
I simply will never vote for Hillary Clinton for one big, gigantic reason:
She voted for the Iraq War and now she is lying about her justification for it.
Just think: The vote to authorize war in Iraq was the most important vote of this woman's lifetime -- and she failed.
Now she looks at the American people with a straight face and says she didn't know she was giving President Bush authorization to go to war.
In 2002 and 2003, I was marching on the streets against this war. I knew that vote was giving Bush authority to go to war.
Everybody I was marching with knew it was a vote to go to war. Even Hillary's fellow Senators knew it was a vote to go to war.
So, am I supposed to vote for a woman who did not show sound judgement on the most important vote of her life and now lies to me with a straight face?
This is classic Clintonian politicking and it must come to an end.
In a general election with Hillary as the Democratic nominee, the Iraq war will be taken off the table as an issue -- and that can not happen in this election year. Iraq, contrary to popular opinion, is THE issue of this election. Indeed, the economy is becoming an issue, too -- but the economy is in the shape it is in because of our war in Iraq. Everything comes back to this unjustifiable, criminal act of war. We don't have money for health care, schools, roads, public financing of campaigns....
And Hillary voted for it.
Hillary will not be able to stand on a stage with John McCain and argue against this war because when the heat was on, she wilted. And when it was politically expedient, she changed her mind.
We saw Bill Clinton change his positions again and again to appease the Republican Congress, starting with his dramatic change early in his presidency on gays in the military. It was, as we would learn over the next 8 years, a classic Clinton move. It makes me afraid that once Hillary and Bill were back in the White House, they would find a reason to keep the troops in Iraq.
I believe Barack Obama is indeed the transformative political figure of our time. And his time is now. He has shown sound judgement on the major issues facing this country. He knows the importance of people being involved in their communities and how grassroots activism is the catalyst for major, sweeping changes.
I support Barack Obama because he has washed away the cynicism in me that was brought on by the last 16 years of divisive, fear-mongering politics.
And while I don't agree with him on everything (i.e., I support a single-payer health care system) I do believe that he will appeal to the best in most of us and inspire those of us who care about people and who care about our country to take action.
